Or, for reading - have you read "A Complicated Kindness" by Miriam Toews? That's a great book. Funny and poingnet without delving into melodrama.

I'm going to have to go with Neil Finn's One All album. It's just got everything I need in an album and his voice, to me, is so incredible. The jangley guitar, with perfect pop hooks, makes is a natural for the American road, too.
Hmm music..lately I've been loving my new Jack Johnson CD (sleep through the static)...
And for reading, personally I love any Jodi Picoult book, both on tape (CD) or in actual book form!

I've been loving the audio versions of classics available for free on Librivox (and listening to books instead of reading them all frees up my hands to knit).
For summer reading I like short stories - they make it easier to take a break for a nap or a swim. The most recent collection I read was The Green Man, edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling, which has some wonderful stories if you like fantasy.
oooh- for music, i would recommend "big star" by haley bonar (she's local to mpls). i just went to her cd release show on thursday and literally haven't taken it out of the cd player since then. literally. i love it! would be good for driving too i think.
also, must second (or third, whatever) graceland. obviously. happy packing!
For laugh out loud fun (road trips or light reading) the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series beginning with One For the Money.

I just finished reading 'The Historian' by Elizabeth Kostova and it would be a great audiobook (it's a vampire novel, without being too steroetypical and cheesy).
Or for some good, driving fun, a mix tape featuring songs about cars (along with some great oldies, that are plain old fun and are best heard travelling down a long stretch of road with the wondiws open and your hair flying!):

if you like something with a less traditional mixture of instruments, try The Decemberists. They're one my favorite bands and their lyrics are always amusing...storytelling through song - which I always find nice for a long trip...books on tape with music!
