Before I pack up shop. Recommend an album for my road trip, type out the perfect "mix tape," suggest an audiobook, or even list some leisurely summer reading.
Three readers drawn at random on June 20th will get some mail with some super-cute surprises.

Or, for reading - have you read "A Complicated Kindness" by Miriam Toews? That's a great book. Funny and poingnet without delving into melodrama.
For audiobooks, I always recommend crime dramas! Here's a link to "the whisperer", which you can burn onto a disc -- http://www.otr.net/?p=whsp -- some gread old-time radio murder mysteries there.
i have spent many a road trip singing to paul simon's graceland. good luck with your trip planning!
I'm going to have to go with Neil Finn's One All album. It's just got everything I need in an album and his voice, to me, is so incredible. The jangley guitar, with perfect pop hooks, makes is a natural for the American road, too.
Hmm music..lately I've been loving my new Jack Johnson CD (sleep through the static)...
And for reading, personally I love any Jodi Picoult book, both on tape (CD) or in actual book form!

+ "The Creative Habit: Learn It & Use It For Life" by Twyla Tharp
+ "They Have a Word for It: A Lighthearted Lexicon of Words & Phrases" by Howard Rheingold
I second the Paul Simon - I actually really enjoy his album "Surprise". :] Joni Mitchell's latest "Shine" is really smooth, too.
Good luck!
I've been loving the audio versions of classics available for free on Librivox (and listening to books instead of reading them all frees up my hands to knit).
For summer reading I like short stories - they make it easier to take a break for a nap or a swim. The most recent collection I read was The Green Man, edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling, which has some wonderful stories if you like fantasy.
oooh- for music, i would recommend "big star" by haley bonar (she's local to mpls). i just went to her cd release show on thursday and literally haven't taken it out of the cd player since then. literally. i love it! would be good for driving too i think.
also, must second (or third, whatever) graceland. obviously. happy packing!
For laugh out loud fun (road trips or light reading) the Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum series beginning with One For the Money.
I would suggest buying the book
Gods Behaving Badly!
I just finished reading 'The Historian' by Elizabeth Kostova and it would be a great audiobook (it's a vampire novel, without being too steroetypical and cheesy).
Or for some good, driving fun, a mix tape featuring songs about cars (along with some great oldies, that are plain old fun and are best heard travelling down a long stretch of road with the wondiws open and your hair flying!):
'Low Rider' by War
'Summer of 69' by Bryan Adams
'Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car' by Billy Ocean
'Drive My Car' by the Beatles
'Jack and Diane' by John Cougar Mellencamp
'Highway to Hell' AC/DC
'Little Deuce Coupe' by the Beach Boys
'Shot Through the Heart' by Bon Jovi
'Life is a Highway' by Tom Cochrane
'Little Red Corvette' by Prince
Have a fun drive! :D
Route 66 - The Rolling Stones
On the Road Again - Willie Nelson (great song to begin a trip)
Take It Easy - Eagles
America - Simon and Garfunkel
Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
Riders of the Storm - The Doors
LA Woman - The Doors
Layla - Derek and the Dominoes
Bad to the Bone - George Thorogood
Space Oddity - David Bowie
I'm Still Standing - Elton John
I Drove All Night - Roy Orbison or Cyndi Lauper
Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car
Roxanne - Sting
Rambling Man - Allman Brothers
It's Your Birthday - 50 Cent (great when you have some speed and an open road)
Ace of Spades - Motorhead
It's My Life - Bon Jovi
The new Counting Crows album, Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings, is great road trip music. It's a nice mix of different styles of songs.

if you like something with a less traditional mixture of instruments, try The Decemberists. They're one my favorite bands and their lyrics are always amusing...storytelling through song - which I always find nice for a long trip...books on tape with music!
